Is this site liberal or communist propaganda?
I don’t endorse parties or candidates. I have plenty of reasons to be critical of many liberals, communists, and those in the wide gulf between. I’m not a capitalist, and I will interrogate many of the ideas and myths Americans have been encouraged to believe and accept.
But I’ll definitely read “propaganda”. I’ll read something that represents a real attempt to get at the heart of our problems, even if I don’t agree with it. Nothing is off-limits. And if you wanna throw me a right-wing or liberal or even a totally wacky reading suggestion in good faith, I’ll take it seriously, although you may not agree with what I have to say about the book when I get to it.
What are your credentials? Do you have a PhD or something?
I got my Bachelor’s in International Studies, minored in English Lit, got a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing, and now work a day job that bears no relationship to any of these things, so I’m well-credentialed in unprofitable decisions.
Who do you speak for?
Any views expressed on Prole Academy are solely my own or those of the author being discussed. They do not constitute an endorsement of any political party or candidates, and do not reflect the views of my employer. I’m reading books, expressing my personal opinions of them and the ideas they cover, and discussing them with anyone who wishes to – nothing more. If anyone else starts writing on this site in the future, the same applies to them.
What kind of books are you reading?
The kind that I’ve always wanted to have read, but never made time for. I’ve always been interested in history, philosophy, sociology, politics, religion, anthropology, physical and behavioral sciences. You can see some of what I have planned in my queue on the bookshelf page.
Through 2021 and 2022, I’ll be neck-deep in history, political and economic philosophy, and sociology – the sexy stuff.
Are you a snob who thinks people can only learn by reading books?
Not at all! I love film, television, video games, music, podcasts, video streamers – and all of them can blow your mind, break your heart, or change your life. When I find ones I think can help us learn and experience things I want to talk about on Prole Academy, I’ll mention them here. Books are just my favorite way to get information. Call them my first love.
I’m not much of a reader. What else you got for me?
I want to get into other forms of content, too – podcasting, videos, memes. We’ll see what I can make time for, and what people who read Prole Academy are interested in. People make iPhone videos from behind the steering wheels of their car and get their ideas out pretty well, so I’m sure I’ll think of something.
Can I submit reviews or essays to Prole Academy?
Not yet – at the moment, it’s just me over here. But I’m considering accepting submissions, engaging in collaboration or getting a full-on partnership in the future. If you think you have a piece that’d be a good fit or you want to have a conversation, that’s awesome; contact me.
How do I get started?
Check out my blog entry on why this site exists, or the one where I discuss what the hell a “prole” is. If that’s not appealing, click through an article or skip straight to a review. People learn when they find something that interests them – I’d rather not pressure you to start with with something that doesn’t.
Just read something! If you have the time, find a book that interests you and do it. Then send me a message, email, post or tweet about it, or ask a question. I’m only here because I embraced the phrase “I don’t know, but I want to”. So can you.
